Lockheed Martin C-5 vice-president Lorraine Martin said every C-5M produced gave added strength to the US Air Force fleet and the warfighters who protect the country.

The C-5M aircraft has been developed following a two-phase modernisation programme for the USAF.

The ongoing avionics modernisation programme, the first modernisation effort, will equip the aircraft with a state-of-the-art glass cockpit with modern avionics and flight instruments.

The RERP, the second modernisation effort, includes 70 enhancements or replacements of major components and subsystems, including the installation of GE CF6-80C2 commercial engines.

The C-5M aircraft has a payload of six mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles, and can carry more cargo further than any other aircraft.

The USAF ordered 52 C-5Ms from Lockheed, due for delivery in 2016. The order follows the modification of 49 C-5Bs, two C-5Cs and one C-5A.

The air force awarded an ongoing fund of $344m to Lockheed to provide continued support for the C-5 Super Galaxy RERP.

A C-5B aircraft, based at Dover AFB, is the second aircraft to enter the RERP production line.
