The US Air Force has awarded a $98m contract to McDonnell Douglas Corporation to produce and integrate the laser joint direct attack munitions (LJDAM) system on various foreign military sales aircraft.
The LJDAM expands the capabilities of the joint direct attack munition (JDAM) to convert missiles into precision guided weapons.

The JDAM guidance kit converts existing unguided free-fall bombs into near precision guided weapons using a global positioning system / inertial navigation system in the tail section and body strakes for additional stability and lift.
The laser JDAM also provides a modular laser sensor kit installed onto the JDAM weapons to add mission flexibility to aim at mobile targets.
