The US has agreed to upgrade Taiwan’s existing fleet of F-16 A/B fighter jets, instead of selling new planes.

According to the Associated Press, the US is expected to issue a formal notification of the intended deal by the end this month.

The upgrade package has not been disclosed, however it is expected to include sophisticated radar, avionics and missile systems.

Congress had been supporting the sale of 66 F-16 C/D fighters for Taiwan and recently introduced legislation for the same.
