The Mongolian Defence Ministry will acquire five Mikoyan MiG-29 fourth-generation jet fighter aircraft from Russia this year.

The Mongolian Air Force has never had MiG-29s, but bought 44 MiG-21 aircraft from Russia in the 1980s, of which, ten aircraft are still operational.

The Mongolian Air Force has several Russian-trained pilots, according to Mongolian Minister of Defence L Bold.

Xinhua News Agency quoted media sources reporting that Mongolia also plans to procure a military transport aircraft to deliver troops, weapons and other military equipment.
