Elbit Systems has been awarded a contract by Elettronica to supply its ELT/572 directed infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) system for installation on different platforms of the Italian Air Force.
ELT/572, jointly funded by Elettronica and Elbit Systems Electro-Optics (Elop), is based on the Elop’s MUSIC system, which is used to counter man portable air defence systems (MANPADS).
DIRCM provides effective protection to military cargo planes, tankers and helicopters from the threat of MANPADS.
The MUSIC system is based on advanced fibre laser technology and counters threats by emitting a laser beam, which changes the trajectory of the enemy missile.
The $15m contract has a performance period of three years.
