The Agusta A109 has primarily been designed as a light utility and training helicopter that will replace the existing two-seater Sioux trainers.

The New Zealand government placed an order for five A109s in 2008 at a cost of $139m, with orders for additional three aircraft.

The assembly on the first one is already in process, and the remaining four A109s are expected to be delivered by September.
