Russia plans to equip all air defence regiments in the armed forces with new advanced S-400 Triumf and Pantsir-S missile systems by 2020, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has said.

The plan to revamp the air defence network is part of the latest state arms procurement programme, according to RIA Novosti.

The S-400 system, with a range of 400km, uses missiles that are modified to engage ballistic and cruise missiles.

Pantsir-S is a short-to-medium range combined surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery system designed to protect point and area targets.

The missile system can carry 12 two-stage solid-fuel surface-to-air missiles and has two dual 30mm automatic cannons capable of engaging targets at a range of 4km.
