Kratos Defense & Security Solutions’ Sounding Rocket Program (SRP)-4 launch vehicle team has supported the US Space Force’s (USSF) first sounding rocket launch with Space Vector.

The scientific experimental research payload was launched by the USSF and the Space and Missile Systems Center’s Launch Enterprise for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virgina, US.

The payload was on board the three-stage Terrier-Terrier-Oriole (TTO) sounding rocket that lifted off earlier this month.

Kratos is part of the Space Vector-led winning team, which received an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract to support the SRP-4 in December 2018.

Under the contract, Space Vector built the TTO vehicle while Kratos Space and Missile Defense was responsible for the integration, interface and mission planning for the launch.

According to Kratos, the launch executed all experiment events on its way to a ‘planned splashdown’ in the Atlantic Ocean.

Vehicle systems and avionics for the mission were provided by Kratos division Kratos Defense & Rocket Support Services (KDRSS), alongside New Mexico State University’s Physical Science Laboratory.

KDRSS president Dave Carter said: “The Kratos team is focused on providing reliable, affordable sounding rocket and suborbital launch solutions to support the DoD’s emerging experimental and national security requirements.

“Kratos is extremely grateful for the opportunity to support this important scientific endeavour.”

Earlier this month, Kratos Defense & Security Solutions won a subcontract to upgrade CH-47F Chinook maintenance training systems.
