India has negotiated with Russia for the procurement of S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems to be deployed with the Indian Air Force (IAF) for approximately Rs400bn ($5.92bn), said officials.
The agreement for the Triumf ballistic missile shield system between India and Russia was signed in 2016.

In a statement, a Russian official involved in the negotiations for the S-400 Triumf deal was quoted by PTI as saying: “The negotiations for the missile deal have been concluded. The financial component has been finalised.”
With the conclusion of the price negotiation, both India and Russia are looking for ways to protect the weapon system deal from sanctions against Russia announced by the US under its Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), reported the Press Trust of India (PTI).
CAATSA came into effect in January. Under the act, the US Government is mandated to punish nations and entities that enter into any kind of transactions with Russia’s defence or intelligence sectors.
In 2014, China was the first nation to enter into a government-to-government deal with Russia for the procurement of the S-400 Triumf missile system.

By GlobalDataThe US is expected to introduce some flexibility to the CAATSA to allow countries such as India to acquire weapon systems from Russia given the long-standing bilateral arms trade.
The US House Armed Services Committee Chairman William Thornberry stated that the sale of defence equipment, particularly the Predator drones to India, possibly needs to be rechecked, reported Zee News.
Speaking to NDTV, Thornberry added: “The acquisition of this technology (S-400) will limit, I am afraid, the degree with which the United States will feel comfortable in bringing additional technology into whatever country we are talking about.”
S-400 Triumf is a mobile medium and long-range air defence system that can engage and destroy targets such as cruise missiles, stealth aircraft, drones and medium-range ballistic missiles.
In February last year, Turkey finalised an agreement to buy S-400 missile defence systems from Russia, reported UPI.
