The US Air Force (USAF) has awarded a contract to General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) for the delivery of cloud-hosted enterprise services (CHES).

Being developed to support the delivery of Microsoft Office 365 services, General Dynamics’ CHES environment enables the USAF to consume additional cloud service offerings in the future, which include Amazon Web Services (AWS), Oracle, and SAP.

Under the terms of the agreement, the company will be responsible for implementing CHES at Wright Patterson Air Force Base (AFB) in Ohio, and at up to two additional airforce locations.

The scope of the contract also includes the delivery of operations and maintenance support for 18 months.

GDIT Defence Division senior vice-president and head Ken Deutsch said: “We are excited to continue the work under the leadership of Stone Baggiano, GDIT’s Director of Logistics and Engineering, and expand our cloud offerings to the Department of Defense (DoD).

“This contract will serve as a springboard for hybrid cloud solutions and provide our DoD customers with more options as they navigate their journey to the cloud.”

The USAF and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) are the first organisations under the DoD to use Microsoft’s Office 365 and Azure cloud services.

The use of the commercial cloud services enables the airforce to increase productivity, while reducing costs and supporting collaboration.

The services are designed to meet industry performance standards, offer redundancy and contingency features, in addition to facilitating advanced technology improvements to enhance user experience and minimise service disruption.

The contract for CHES was originally awarded to NES Associates, a subsidiary of CSRA, a company bought by General Dynamics on 3 April.
