Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 772 in Q1 2024, versus 1,475 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 27% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Safran filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 72 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 137 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Kolon Industries with 47 environmental sustainability patent filings, RTX (40 filings), and General Electric (32 filings) in Q1 2024.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 39% share of total patent filings

The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q1 2024 was in the US with 39%, followed by China (26%) and Japan (11%). The share represented by the US was 2% higher than the 37% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
