The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of AIM-120C7 missiles and associated equipment to Japan.

Under the estimated $33m sale, Japan has requested for the supply of a total of 17 AIM-120C7 advanced medium range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAM), along with two captive air training missiles, containers, missile support and test equipment. Spare and repair parts and other related elements of logistics and programme support have also been asked for.

"Under the estimated $33m sale, Japan has requested for the supply of a total of 17 AIM-120C7 advanced medium range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAM), along with two captive air training missiles, containers, missile support and test equipment."

The missiles are required by the Japanese Government for national defence, regional security, inventory modernisation, and interoperability with the US.

Consistent with US objectives and the 1960 Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, the sale is expected to augment the Japanese Air Self-Defence Force’s ability to defend Japan’s territory, and protect critical Japanese and US installations.

Approved by the US Department of State, the sale also contributes to the foreign policy and national security of the US, which shares bases and facilities in Japan.

Claimed to be one of the major political and economic powers in East Asia and the Western Pacific, Japan is a key ally of the US, and currently has AIM-120C5 missiles in its inventory.

Raytheon Missile Systems has been named as prime contractor for the FMS programme.

Under development since 1998, the AIM-120C-7 is an upgraded variant of the AIM-120C AMRAAM, and has extended range and enhancements in homing capability.

Having completed a successful test flight in 2003, the missile is currently being manufactured for both domestic and foreign military customers.

The AIM-120 AMRAAM is a modern, fire-and-forget beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile capable of conducting all-weather day-and-night operations.

The missile is currently in service with the US Air Force, Navy, and more than 25 US-allied nations worldwide.
