Saab has signed a new industrial co-operation agreement with the Malaysian company Defence Technologies (Deftech) in relation to the JAS 39 Gripen multi-role combat aircraft.
Under the terms of agreement, the two companies would deepen and broaden the existing relationship by adding the Gripen system to their joint planning.

The agreement outlines planned industrial cooperation that will explore areas of technology transfer and bring further expertise to Malaysia.
Specifically, the agreement covers Gripen-related maintenance and support activities, design and manufacturing of advanced composite systems, and associated technology transfer, amongst others.
Saab Malaysia head Thomas Lindén said: "For Saab, the agreement with Deftech is an important step in order to do further business in Malaysia and surrounding countries."
Apart from supporting the Malaysian Government’s defence programmes with solutions that enhance the country’s operational capabilities, the new agreement is also expected to create business opportunities for the two signatories.

By GlobalDataThe two companies entered into an industrial co-operation teaming agreement in 2011 for collaboration on an airborne early warning and control (AWACS) system.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) covering various technology areas was signed in March 2013 that further expanded their cooperation.
Saab has already supplied high-performance, cost-efficient defence equipment to the Malaysian Armed Forces. This includes naval and land radars, airborne self-protection systems for helicopters and fighters, as well as naval command and control systems, and army support weapons, including anti-tank weapons.
The JAS 39 Gripen is a lightweight, multirole fighter aircraft designed to conduct a wide range of air-to-air, air-to-surface and reconnaissance missions. It is powered by a single Volvo-Flygmotor RM12 engine.
The single Volvo-Flygmotor RM12 engine powered-aircraft is currently operated by the air forces of Czech Republic, Hungary, Sweden, South Africa, and Thailand.
