The US Air Force (USAF) will reduce civilian employees in force authorities effective through April 4 to comply with US Department of Defense’s (DoD) funding targets.
The decision will see some Air Force installations rebalance the civilian workforce.

The move follows a major command needs assessment in early August that identified more than 1,000 civilian overrun across 48 Air Force installations.
The Reduction in Force (RIF) authorities will assist in identifying the additional employees who are not assigned against funded positions, allowing them to retain their grade or pay while placing at the installations.
USAF said in a statement: "The Air Force no longer has the ability to carry overages when the position is not funded and will use RIF authorities to help place most of the remaining civilians on funded positions."
USAF Manpower, Personnel and Services deputy chief of staff lieutenant general Gina Grosso added: "Voluntary efforts to balance the civilian workforce since fiscal year 2014 have moved us significantly closer to our target manning levels.
