Raytheon has unveiled plans to offer next-generation T-100 aircraft for the US Air Force’s (USAF) advanced pilot training (APT) competition.

The company has collaborated with Finmeccanica, CAE USA and Honeywell to bid for the training programme.

Powered with Honeywell’s twin F124 turbofan engine and a ground based training system, the aircraft will ensure safe and cost-effective training for the USAF.

Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems president Rick Yuse said: "The success of our nation’s future pilots depends on a comprehensive trainer to prepare them to take full advantage of the capabilities unique to advanced fourth and fifth generation fighters.

Finmeccanica Aircraft Division managing director Filippo Bagnato said: "The T-100 offers dynamic kinetic performance, while also delivering an embedded, tactical training system that immerses pilots in realistic mission scenario.

"The M-346, the basis for the T-100, is already operational and preparing pilots around the world for the challenges of today’s complex fighter platforms."

The T-100, an advanced variant of the Aermacchi M-346, is currently in use by the Italian Air Force, Republic of Singapore Air Force, Israeli Air Force and Polish Air Force.

Raytheon, if selected, will serve as the prime contractor for the programme.

The company has supported the training of nearly 45,000 pilots and crew in the past.
