A Jenoptik-led consortium has been selected to produce protective domes for the main radar system of the Eurofighter Typhoon interceptor.
BAE Systems, the representative of the multi-national Eurofighter consortium, has placed the order for radomes.

Eurofighter Typhoon is said to be the world’s most advanced swing-role combat aircraft providing simultaneously deployable air-to-air and air-to-surface capabilities.
The aircraft is currently in service with six customers across 20 operational units and has been ordered by two more.
The order requires Jenoptik to supply 28 protective domes, which form the tip of the aircraft.
Production of the radomes will begin at the end of 2017 and will continue until the end of 2018.

By GlobalDataMade out of fibre glass-reinforced plastic (GRP), the 2.30m-long radome acts as a cover for the sensitive radar system behind it.
The radome also bears aerodynamic loads, and protects sensitive antennae from external influences, including dirt, precipitation, or bird strikes.
It undergoes radar-electrical optimisation so that the radar signals can be received and transmitted without distortion.
Since 2002, the consortium has manufactured and supplied more than 580 of these protective domes.
Jenoptik said that it produces and maintains various radomes for military aircraft, including Eurofighter Typhoon, the multirole combat aircraft Tornado, and the Nato helicopter NH90.
It also provides service for AWACS radomes as the only licensed partner across the world.
