The US Air Force (USAF) has selected Textron Systems Support Solutions to provide contractor logistics support for the Afghan Air Force.

Valued at around $50m, the contract requires the company to provide training and maintenance in support of Cessna C-208B Caravans that are currently in service with the Afghan Air Force over the next five years.

The Cessna C-208B Caravans are used for military transport and training, Textron stated.

Textron Systems Support Solutions business development vice-president Mark Hitch said: "Support Solutions began working with these Cessna C-208B Caravans last year as part of a bridge contact, and we are looking forward to continuing the relationship with our customer through this five-year contract.

"This endeavour will ensure that Textron personnel are the sole providers of maintenance and training on our own aircraft.

"This work will further showcase the total Textron solution we can provide around the world."

Work under the contract has commenced and is being carried out at Kabul Air Base and Kandahar Air Base, Afghanistan.

"This endeavour will ensure that Textron personnel are the sole providers of maintenance and training on our own aircraft."

The transfer of capabilities and maintenance training by Textron will allow the Afghan Air Force to work independently.

In January last year, the US Department of Defense (DoD) approved a foreign military sale (FMS) of Cessna C-208B Caravan aircraft to support Afghanistan trainer programme.

The $55m contract tasked Cessna Aircraft with supplying contractor support for 18 C-208 B aircraft and one C-208 aircrew training device, including maintenance and training.
