Raytheon has secured a $375m contract to upgrade the US Air Force's (USAF) Air and Space Operations Center Weapon System (AOC WS). 

The contract to sustain and modernise AOC WS has been awarded by the Air Force Materiel Command and is valid for more than six years.

Raytheon intelligence, information and services president Dave Wajsgras said: "We will use our unmatched cyber, automation and analytics expertise to modernise the air force's weapons system, providing an advantage in everything from security to actionable insight in the digital battlespace.”

The company will update the existing AOC WS baseline software and develop and deploy new software upgrades in order to improve air and space command and control operations.

Raytheon IIS mission support and modernization vice-president Todd Probert said: "Raytheon's innovative modernisation through the sustainment approach incrementally improves systems without interruption to critical missions.

"The use of software development best practices, such as Agile and DevOps, speeds up the delivery of these systems to the warfighter."

The air and space operations centres provide a strategic capability for the USAF, with operators at 22 global locations using the AOC WS to command and control aircraft through all of the air force's critical missions.

Northrop Grumman-built AOC WS is designed to modernise the USAF's operational-level command and control (C2) centres to increase operational effectiveness and reduce costs.

The system is said to improve the speed of command for planning and execution of air and space force operations, and enable more effective, dynamic planning for irregular warfare or counterinsurgency operations for the airforce.

Raytheon is also hiring new system architects, software developers, cyber engineers, and IT services.
