The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has awarded a Skr1.9bn ($217.9m) contract to Saab to provide support and maintenance services for its armed forces' Gripen C/D aircraft fleet.

Saab will provide design and support, component maintenance, spare parts and logistics from June, until December 2019.

The contract also covers the procurement of certain equipment, besides requisition of technical system support, aircraft maintenance with associated spare parts and the management of obsolescence.

Saab Support and Services business area acting head Torsten Öhman said: "This contract will ensure effective Gripen C/D operation and availability for the coming years.

“Our support solutions contribute to Gripen's low life-cycle cost and provide the Swedish Armed Forces and other Gripen customers with the most effective means by which to sustain their aircraft.”

Saab will perform operations under the contract at its facilities in Linköping, Arboga, Gothenburg, Järfälla, Växjö and Östersund, Sweden.

The Gripen multi-role fighter aircraft has been designed to perform a variety of air-to-air, air-to-surface and reconnaissance missions, by employing the latest weapons.

The cockpit of the aircraft includes three large, full colour, multi-function displays and a wide angle diffractive optics head-up display with a holographic combiner.

The primary sensor of the Gripen target acquisition/weapons aiming system is the long range PS-05/A radar, Saab stated.
