The Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) Advanced Power Technology Office (APTO) is seeking research ideas to identify advanced power generation and energy-efficient technologies, which will improve the US Air Force’s (USAF) energy security posture.

Through an Advanced Research Announcement (ARA) titled: ‘Government Requirement for Advanced Power and Energy (GRAPE)’, the APTO is seeking to boost the readiness for the USAF installations and military operations.

USAF APTO project engineer captain Harold Gotwald said: “These products should maintain a focus on energy resiliency, efficiency, cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability with a demonstration and evaluation to further enhance the technology readiness levels of those systems.”

“The ARA will encourage the development of alternative energy and energy efficiency technologies that help deliver enhanced capabilities and benefits.”

Differing from Broad Agency Announcements, the current ARA provides latest and more advanced types of research and development (R&D) and involves special factors or requirements such as higher budget activities of R&D appropriations, non-R&D appropriations, prototyping, or system / hardware-specific work.

Until 2 May 2023, the ARA will encourage the development of alternative energy and energy efficiency technologies that help deliver enhanced capabilities and benefits to the USAF installations, equipment and aircraft.

Gotwald added: “The parameters of this announcement are broadly defined because we want to explore a wide range of advanced solutions for a wide range of situations.”
