The US Air Force (USAF) has awarded purchase orders to aerospace and defence contractor CPI Aerostructures in support of its T-38C Pacer Classic III aircraft structural modification programme.

With a total value of approximately $4.4m, the current purchase orders add to the four previous orders received by the company for the procurement of structural modification kits for the T-38C aircraft.

The total five orders, cumulatively valued at $18.1m, have been awarded under a potential $49m indefinite delivery / indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract won by CPI Aerostructures in February 2015.

The USAF Life Cycle Management Center, based at Hill Air Force Base (AFB), Utah, US, serves as the contracting activity for the larger contract.

Under the terms of the $49m IDIQ contract, CPI Aerostructures is responsible for delivering structural components, programme management, logistics, discrepancy reporting / resolution and sub-contract management for the T-38C Pacer Classic III aircraft.

The USAF’s T-38C aircraft is a twin-engine, two-seat, supersonic jet trainer used by the US Air Education Training Command as an advanced trainer for specialised undergraduate pilot training.

The Pacer Classic III structural modification programme will help the replacement of major, fatigue-sensitive structural items, including the steel dorsal, cockpit and upper / lower centre longerons.

Associated bulkheads / formers, skins and floors will also be removed and replaced as part of the programme.
