Soldiers from the Royal logistics Corps (RLC) will be able to practice driving a vehicle through various conflict situations using a new high-tech virtual training computer programme.

The joint combat operation virtual environment (JCOVE), developed through a £2m MoD contract, uses a commercial application called virtual battlespace to provide soldiers with a realistic environment in which to practice tactical techniques and convoy operations.

The system includes realistic operational equipment such as a voice over internet protocol to allow trainees to communicate through headsets, as well as steering wheel and pedal sets for vehicle control and control software that can be manipulated by instructors.

Soldiers will learn how to operate under fire and how to react under a variety of events and scenarios including being under fire, road side bombs and ambush.

Minister for Defence Equipment and Support, Baroness Taylor said that the MoD was committed to using relevant contemporary operational equipment to train the UK’s Royal Logistics Corps. “This latest technology will save lives,” said Taylor.

The RLC transports soldiers, combat supplies and materials across the battlefield. The drivers also provide security both within tactical locations and during convoy moves.
