The Missile Defence Agency (MDA) of the US has managed to test aspects of the ballistic missile defense system (BMDS), during a routine operational test of a US Air Force strategic missile.

The participation enabled the MDA to conduct numerous exercises and obtain extensive data without incurring the expense associated with launching a test-specific target missile.

The air force test, called Glory Trip 195, was a part of a continuing programme to evaluate and demonstrate the operational readiness of US ground-based strategic deterrent force.

New systems tested within BMDS included the sea-based X-band radar (SBX), a transportable AN/TPY-2 X-band radar and an external sensors laboratory to collect data during the exercise.

The data will be used to improve sensor capabilities and in reducing risks for future BMDS tests.
