The US Air Force has awarded a modified contract for the C-17 Globemaster III sustainment partnership (GSP) programme to Boeing worth $1.1bn.

The C-17 is a long-haul, military-transport aircraft that can transport large equipment, supplies and troops to small airfields in harsh terrains. The airlifter operates as a part of the USAF Air Mobility Command’s fleet.

Under the modified contract, Boeing will provide total system support for the C-17s including programme management, logistics, material and equipment management.

The scope of the contract also includes engineering, depot-level aircraft maintenance, engine management, long-term sustainment planning, air logistics centre partnering support, depot activation and field support.

The GSP programme is aimed at providing total aircraft sustainment support under a single contract order to improve mission readiness, while reducing operating and support costs.

The US Air Force had signed the initial GSP agreement with Boeing in 2004.
