The Nato airlift management organisation has received a second C-17 Globemaster III aircraft from Boeing to support its Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) initiative.

The 12-nation SAC consortium will use the airlifter to support military, humanitarian, disaster-relief and peacekeeping missions.

The second of three C-17s to be assigned to SAC’s heavy airlift wing in Hungary will support International Security Assistance Force operations in Afghanistan and the airlift requirements of SAC member nations.

The consortium comprises of ten Nato nations – Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and the US – and Partnership for Peace members Sweden and Finland.

Boeing will deliver the third airlifter in early October 2009.
