Israel Air Force is intending to procure V-22 transport aircraft, to replace its current fleet of aging C-130 and CH-53 transport aircraft.

The Boeing-developed V-22 aircraft can hover like a helicopter during take-off and landing due to its tilt-rotor capability.

The V-22 aircraft, which is currently used by the US Air Force and Marines for transport, rescue and special forces operations, is capable of flying at relatively high speeds, powered by its turboprop engines.

Due to its double speed, range and maximum altitude, the V-22 aircraft is more advanced than the CH-53 helicopter, which is currently in service with Israeli defence forces, and will enable commando and rescue operation at greater distances.

The drawn out development process and technological difficulties with the tilt-rotor system of the aircraft has increased its current price to $65 million.
