The F-35 will replace the air force’s aging aircraft such as the F-16, F/A-18 and A-10, following its entry into service in 2012.

The air force is also considering Idaho, Utah, Vermont and South Carolina as other possible options for the F-35 base.

The notice of intent, based on an environmental impact statement, will examine land use, airspace and safety, air and water quality, noise, socioeconomics, biological and cultural resources, and cumulative actions.

The air force will now hold public meetings between 8 and 12 February, in Jacksonville, Palatka, Lake Wales and Avon Park to discuss issues regarding the F-35 basing with residents.
