During the $6.5m programme, the plane will be inspected and examined for cracks and X-rayed for microscopic feather-like defects that could make the plane dangerous to fly.
The C-130 will fly 16,000 flight hours from Jakarta to Oklahoma City, and spend six months in a hangar run by Arinc during the upgrade programme.
The air force will also send 17 flight and maintenance crew members to accompany the plane to the US, where ten will remain for the entire project.
