The Finnish Defence Force is seeking to invest over €1bn ($1.31bn) to upgrade its fleet of F-18 Hornet jet fighters used by the Finnish Air Force.

The country will upgrade the fighter jets to enhance its capability so that the air force will not need new combat jets before 2025.

The upgrade will modify the Hornets to function as assault planes, capable of hitting land targets from a long distance, according to YLE Finnish Broadcasting Corporation.

Finland is also studying the capabilities of F-35 to modernise its air force.
