The Royal Air Force’s (RAF) 34 Squadron Regiment has participated in Exercise Lion Strike II/10 in preparation for deployment in Afghanistan in October 2010.

The squadron, based at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire, UK, will provide force protection capabilities at the main bases in Afghanistan including Camp Bastion and Kandahar Air Field.

The squadron will patrol around the air stations in Afghanistan to ensure that air assets and personnel can operate freely.

The mission will also include air-land integration role on operations, controlling air assets such as rotary, fixed wing and intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR).

The squadron will also help to identify improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and work jointly with the medical emergency response team.

The training exercise was performed at Otterburn Training Area, Northumberland, UK.
