The Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation has awarded a contract to Nammo for the development of 25mm APEX ammunition and associated training ammunition for the Lockheed Martin F35 Lightning II fighter jet.

The Uranium-free APEX ammunition can be used against both air and ground targets.

The ammunition also offers a viable alternative for countries that continue to use aircraft ammunition that contains depleted uranium.

The training ammunition is based on Reduced Ricochet Risk technology and provides enhanced safety in connection with firing exercises.

Nammo will complete the NOK66m ($10.8m) project by the end of 2012.
