The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of a potential sale of a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft and associated equipment to Australia.

Under the estimated $300m foreign military sale, Australia has also requested a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, four Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 engines and one AN/AAQ-24V(13) large aircraft infrared countermeasures (LAIRCM) system.

The C-17 aircraft will further improve Australia’s rapid deployment capability in support of global coalition operations and will also enhance its ability to perform humanitarian and peacekeeping operations.

The country currently operates four C-17As, based at Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Amberley, which provide heavy airlift capability.

Boeing in Long Beach, California, US, will be the prime contractor.
