The Raytheon small diameter bomb II (SDB II) programme has successfully completed a US Air Force (USAF) critical design review (CDR), paving the way for captive flight testing later this year.

Raytheon Missile Systems vice-president of air warfare systems Harry Schulte said the SDB II featured a mature tri-mode seeker and a cutting-edge warhead.

SDB II is an air-launched, precision-strike stand-off weapon that will enable the warfighter to defeat moving and fixed targets in adverse weather conditions.

The weapon incorporates an improved seeker that features three modes of operation – millimetre-wave radar, uncooled imaging infrared and semiactive laser.
