Diehl Defence has successfully demonstrated two test firings of the surface-to-air guided missile IRIS-T surface launched (SL) at the OTB firing range in South Africa.

The test fire achieved all objectives including safe missile launch, flight-mechanical and aerodynamic characteristics, as well as operational performance of the new rocket motor.

The operational principle of guiding the missile with external radar data by transmitting virtual target data to the missile during flight was also demonstrated.

The IRIS-T SL, an advanced version of the IRIS-T air-to-air missile, is being designed to meet the requirements for a modern guided missile for ground-based air defence.

The IRIS-T air-to-air missile is in series production within a European cooperation programme.
