The US Air Force (USAF) has received a small airborne joint tactical radio engineering development model (EDM) to support platform integration activities of the airborne and maritime / fixed station joint tactical radio system (AMF JTRS).

The EDM, integrated with Link-16 Waveform functionality, will be used to support integration and architecture validation activities within the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) mobility air forces airborne networking installation and integration programme.

It also provides an opportunity to perform networking, avionics and software checks prior to integration.

AMF JTRS connects USAF aircrew and naval personnel with ground soldiers, and facilitates secure voice and data communications across diverse military units.

Lockheed Martin’s IS&GS-Defense Joint Tactical Network Solutions vice-president Mark Norris said delivery of the EDM joint tactical radio hosting Link-16, coupled with the earlier delivery of a pre EDM, supports platform integration risk reduction efforts for the C-130J and C-5, and further demonstrates the ability of a software defined radio to meet the evolving communications needs of warfighters.

The EDM, delivered to the C-130J and C-5 System Integration Laboratories in Marietta, Georgia, US, is the second EDM delivered to the USAF by Lockheed Martin’s AMF JTRS team, which includes BAE Systems, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon.
