The US Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded a performance based logistics (PBL) contract to Boeing for the C-17 Globemaster III integrated sustainment programme (GISP).

The contract has a funding of $1.4bn for 2012, with the $11.7bn ceiling price period of performance designated for 2012 to 2021.

Under the new GISP contract, the company will provide material management and depot level maintenance support for the C-17 aircraft.

The C-17 Globemaster III is used for rapid strategic delivery of troops and cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area.

Boeing vice president and C-17 GISP programme manager Gus Urzua said: "This award marks the beginning of the Air Force’s 10-year sole source sustainment strategy."

International C-17 customers in the UK, Australia, Canada, Qatar and a consortium of Nato countries are also participating in the GISP programme.
