The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of a potential sale of one C-17 Globemaster III aircraft and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support to Australia.

Under the estimated $300m foreign military sale, Australia has also requested four Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 engines and one AN/AAQ-24V (13) large-aircraft infrared countermeasures (LAIRCM) system.

The proposed sale will enhance Australia’s ability to deploy the aircraft for global coalition operations and also for regional humanitarian or peacekeeping operations.

Australia currently operates a fleet of five C-17A aircraft from the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Amberley.

Boeing subsidiary McDonnell Douglas Corporation will be the prime contractor.
