AN/TPS-78 radar

Northrop Grumman has been awarded a contract for the supply of additional AN/TPS-78 air defence and surveillance radar systems to the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF).

Under the contract, whose value remains undisclosed, the company will supply AN/TPS-78 radars, along with training, spare parts and logistics support.

Northrop Grumman International Systems business unit vice-president Robert Royer said the company continues its 25 years of support of the RTAF and the national security infrastructure of Thailand with the contract.

"Highly mobile and proven in a wide range of environmental conditions, the AN/TPS-78 will give the Royal Thai Air Force a powerful new capability for monitoring its national airspace," Royer said.

The AN/TPS-78 is an S-band, long-range radar designed for detection of high-speed, high-altitude targets, including military aircraft, in challenging environmental conditions.

"The AN/TPS-78 is an S-band, long-range radar designed for detection of high-speed, high-altitude targets, including military aircraft."

Deployed by high mobility trucks, the C-130 Hercules aircraft-transportable next-generation radar is well-suited for use in mountainous and coastal regions, due to its ability to detect small, low-altitude targets in heavy ground and sea clutter.

The remotely controllable radar can perform both air traffic control (ATC) and air defence missions, and can also effectively operate against jamming using a frequency agile mode in the 300MHz operating band.

Currently operational with the US Air Force (USAF) and a multitude of customers worldwide, the AN/TPS-78 systems have logged more than one million operating hours to date.

Deliveries under the contract are scheduled to start in 2015.
