Both UAS are scheduled to carry safety and security missions during the forthcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup Games.

Elbit Systems UAS Division general manager Elad Aharonson said the contract makes FAB the eighth customer of the Hermes 900 UAS in the world.

"We are honored to enable FAB to benefit from the advantages of joint flight operations, using both the Hermes 450 and the Hermes 900, a unique solution for intelligence missions, border protection, perimeter control of infrastructure and critical sites, as well as Safe City programs and large scale events," Aharonson said.

The contract also includes provision of technical and engineering support, and logistic and maintenance services to FAB by Elbit’s Brazil subsidiary, AEL Systemas.

Derived from the combat-proven Hermes 450 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), Hermes 900 is a medium altitude long endurance (MALE) UAS designed for conducting persistent intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) operations in the battlefield.

Weighing 970kg, the UAS is capable of flying at a maximum altitude of 30,000ft, with an endurance of more than 30 hours, and is primarily used to capture and transmit real-time battlefield imagery to a universal ground control station (UGCS).

The UAS system allows for joint flight missions with the Hermes 450, and is also operated by the air forces of Israel, Chile and Colombia, as well as the Mexican Federal Police.

Delivery under the contract is scheduled to take place within the next two months.
