A400M

Elbit Systems has secured a contract to supply J multi-spectral directed infrared countermeasure (J-MUSIC) systems for installation on the German Air Force’s A400M aircraft.

Awarded by Diehl BGT Defence, the contract covers delivery of an unspecified number of J-MUSIC directed infrared counter measure (DIRCM) systems for the first phase of the German Air Force’s A400 self-protection programme.

Three systems would be integrated into a multi-turret DIRCM system, to ensure 360° protection of the aircraft.

In October, Diehl received a contract from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) to develop a new laser protection system for A400M to counter guided missiles.

J-MUSIC is a multi-spectral infra-red fibre-laser-based DIRCM system designed to safeguard large military and civilian aircraft against attack by terrorists with infrared-guided missiles.

Engineered for easy installation on a range of aircraft in single turret or multi-turret configurations, the system can rapidly acquire and track incoming man-portable air-defence systems (MANPADS) in all operational conditions.

Elbit Systems president and CEO Bezhalel Machlis said: "Our DIRCM systems provide effective protection to the growing threat of MANPADS, and we hope that additional customers will follow and select our systems as their preferred solution."

The system has successfully completed extensive testing and has already been delivered to customers for installation on multiple aircraft types.

Deliveries under the contract, whose value remains undisclosed, are scheduled to be completed in 2015.

Manufactured by Airbus Military, the A400M is designated as a tactical airlifter with strategic capabilities and can also be configured to perform long-range cargo and troop transport, medical evacuation, aerial refuelling and electronic surveillance missions.

In addition to Germany, the aircraft has also been ordered by the air forces of Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Spain, Turkey and the UK.
