The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of a possible $593m foreign military sale of A-29 Super Tucano aircraft and weapons to the Government of Nigeria.

Under the sale, Nigeria has requested for 12 A-29 Super Tucano, including associated training, spare parts, aviation and ground support equipment, and hangar, facilities and infrastructure required to support the programme.

The proposed sale, which has been approved by the US State Department, is part of the US commitment to help Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin countries in the fight against ISIS.

In addition, the sale represents the US security cooperation to help professionalise, upgrade, and boost Nigeria’s armed forces’ capacity.

Sierra Nevada Corporation will serve as the prime contractor in connection with this potential sale.

The US Government or contractor representatives will be assigned to Nigeria to provide mobile training teams and contract logistic support.

Special training on the law of armed conflict and human rights, and air-to-ground integration to mitigate civilian harm in air operations will be included in the assignment.

The Super Tucano has been designed for use in a range of operations such as counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, border surveillance, and illicit trade interdiction.

The Nigerian military will use the aircraft to support missions against terrorist organisations Boko Haram and ISIS West Africa, and to counter illicit trafficking in the country and the Gulf of Guinea.
