Following an upgrade to boost its capabilities to strike hidden North Korean artillery units with guided smart bombs, the USAF has deployed three A-10 fighter jets in South Korea.

The 25th Fighter Squadron at Osan Air Base received the first three improved A-10C jets, replacing the A-10A aircraft currently operated by the unit.

The upgrade, which began in 2005, equipped the A-10C with advanced satellite-guided joint direct attack munitions (JDAM), according to Stars and Stripes.

Fitted with new electronics the C-model enables pilots to receive key target and other data digitally.

The digital situational awareness data link (SADL) in the A-10C jet reduces the A-10 pilot’s reliance on radio transmissions.

The A-10C looks similar to the A model, and is armoured with a 30mm Gatling gun.
