Valued at $2.4bn, the foreign military sales contract forms part of an Armed Services modernisation and recapitalisation effort announced by Qatar in March.

Earlier this month, the company received a $75.6m contract from the US Air Force to create an air and missile defence operation centre (ADOC) for Qatar.

Apart from Patriot, the ADOC will integrate other US air defence systems such as the early warning radar, and terminal high-altitude area defence (THAAD) with European air defence systems, and radars and Qatar’s air operation centre.

The Patriot system is expected to serve as the cornerstone of Qatar’s advanced integrated air and missile defence (IAMD) capability.

Work under the contract is scheduled to be carried out at Raytheon’s Integrated Air Defense Center in Andover, Massachusetts, El Paso, Texas, and Huntsville, Alabama, US.

Patriot is claimed to be the world’s most modern and capable air and missile defence system, offering protection against a full range of advanced threats. This includes aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The system is currently used by 13 armed forces across the globe.
