Raytheon to support Australia’s air defence project worth $1.53bn

Raytheon Australia secured a contract from the Australian Department of Defence to support the short-range, ground-based air defence project worth up to A$2bn ($1.53bn).

Under the A$12.1m ($9.3m) contract, the company will support the first stage development of the new air defence system.

Expected to create up to ten new jobs, the contract covers the delivery of risk mitigation activities for one year to inform the final system configuration of national advanced surface-to-air missile system (NASAMS).


IAF completes flight tests of smart anti-airfield weapon

The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully completed testing on a smart anti-airfield weapon (SAAW) called Glide Bomb.

The lightweight guided bomb was indigenously developed by Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), as well as other laboratories of DRDO and IAF.

The SAAW was dropped from an IAF aircraft in the ranges at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, India.

Qatar seeks $1.1bn support for F-15QA Strike Eagle from US

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of a possible $1.1bn foreign military sale (FMS) to support Qatar’s F-15QA Strike Eagle multi-role fighter aircraft.

Under the sale, Qatar seeks to receive design and construction services, new parking/loading ramps, hot cargo pads, taxiways, hangars, back shops and alert facilities in support of the fighter aircraft programme.

The Government of Qatar also requested weapons storage areas, hardened shelters, squadron operations, maintenance and training facilities, as well as information technology support and cyber facilities. It ordered force protection support and squadron operations facilities.


UK MoD awards contract for A400M threat simulation equipment

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) contracted Leonardo to provide pre-flight simulation of radar threats to the Royal Air Force’s (RAF) new A400M transport aircraft.

Leonardo’s threat simulation equipment uses special radio-frequency (RF) emitting ‘hoods’ to simulate radar threats while the aircraft is still on the ground.

By stimulating A400M’s RF sensors with real radar energy, Leonardo’s equipment will ensure that the aircraft’s complex defensive aids suite is functioning properly.


Saab’s Gripen E fighter reaches supersonic speeds

Saab’s Gripen E reached supersonic speeds for the first time during flight tests over the Baltic Sea.

The aircraft reached a top speed of Mach 1. The fighter is an advanced version of the Gripen C/D multi-role aircraft.

The fighter achieved supersonic speed for a few minutes while carrying out manoeuvres, Saab stated.


Thales and Dassault to upgrade Mirage 2000-9 fleet in UAE

Thales and Dassault Aviation are set to upgrade the UAE Armed forces’ Mirage 2000-9 fleet.

The UAE Armed Forces announced its intention to sign a contract for the Mirage upgrade programme at the Dubai Airshow this year.

Thales supplies the complete electronic combat solutions on-board the Mirage 2000-9 to cater to the pilot’s need for tactical information, enhanced survivability, and operational effectiveness.


MBDA completes live firings of Brimstone from Typhoon aircraft

MBDA successfully completed a series of live firings of the Brimstone air-to-surface missile from a Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.

The live firings were conducted as part of new enhancements to be made to the British Royal Air Force (RAF).

The missile was fired from BAE Systems’ Military Air and Information facility at Warton, Lancashire, UK, to achieve weapons integration clearance for operational use.


Leonardo delivers first AW101 helicopter to RNoAF

Leonardo delivered the first of 16 AW101 all-weather long-range search-and-rescue (SAR) helicopters to the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

The aircraft is expected to enter service with the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) in 2018, following the completion of the operational test and evaluation (OT&E) phase.

The OT&E of the aircraft will be performed at Sola Air Base in southern Norway.


Embraer to conduct flight trials of KC-390 aircraft in US

Embraer is set to conduct a series of flight trials of its new KC-390 multi-mission military transport and tanker jet in the US.

The flight trials will be carried out at Embraer’s facility in Jacksonville, Florida, as part of KC-390’s flight test campaign for certification.

The aircraft will undergo tests in the avionics systems and measurement of external noise and operations with crosswind over the next two to three weeks.


JASDF’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye conducts first flight

The Japan Air Self Defense Force’s (JASDF) E-2D Advanced Hawkeye (AHE) made its first flight on 9 October.

The successful flight was carried out by Northrop Grumman at its Aircraft Integration Center of Excellence in St Augustine, Florida, US.

Northrop Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeye programmes vice-president Jane Bishop said: “The successful first flight of Japan’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is a significant milestone in delivering advanced airborne early warning and surveillance capabilities to the country.
