The US State Department has approved a possible foreign military sale (FMS) to Turkey for Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) and associated equipment, parts and logistical support.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress about the potential sale.
Under this $70m proposed sale, Turkey would receive JDAM tail kits that consist of 400 GBU-31(V)1 for use with Mk84 bombs, 200 GBU-31(V)3 for use with BLU-109 bombs, 300 GBU-38 for use with Mk82 bombs and 100 GBU-54 Laser JDAM kits for use with Mk82 bombs.
The scope of the delivery includes 200 BLU-109 Hard Target Penetrator Warheads, and 1,000 FMU-152A/B fuses.
Moreover, the country will receive containers, support equipment, spare and repair parts, integration, test equipment, publications and technical documentation.
The delivery of personnel training and training equipment, US Government and contractor engineering and technical support, and other related elements of logistics support are also part of the deal.
With the new capabilities, the Turkish Air Force is expected to improve its ability to defend, and provides a capability to contribute to future Nato operations.
In addition, the new systems will offer increased interoperability between Nato and US forces, and also expand regional defences to counter common threats to air, border, and shipping assets in the region.
The principal contractor for this proposed deal is Raytheon.
Recently, the US State Department has approved a possible FMS worth $243m to Spain for an MQ-9 Block 5 aircraft.
As part of this development, Spain is expected to receive four MQ-9 Block 5 remotely piloted aircraft and 20 embedded global positioning system / inertial guidance unit (EGI).
