US President-elect Donald Trump has called for the government to scrap the order for new Air Force One from Boeing in order to cut expenses.
The Boeing VC-25, a military version of the Boeing 747 airliner, is currently being operated by the US Air Force (USAF) as Air Force One for carrying the President.
The electronics onboard the aircraft protect it against electromagnetic pulses and the communications equipment allows the aircraft to function as a mobile command centre in the event of an attack on the country.
On Twitter, Trump said that plans for the new Air Force One must be cancelled as the project is costing more than $4bn, according to media sources.
Trump tweeted: "Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4bn.
"Cancel order!"
He was further quoted by reporters as saying: "The plane is totally out of control.
"I think it's ridiculous.
"I think Boeing is doing a little bit of a number.
"We want Boeing to make a lot of money but not that much money.”
In response to Trump's tweet, Boeing said: "We are currently under contract for $170m to help determine the capabilities of these complex military aircraft that serve the unique requirements of the President of the United States.
“We look forward to working with the USAF on subsequent phases of the program allowing us to deliver the best planes for the President at the best value for the American taxpayer."
The US Government has ordered two aircraft from Boeing, which are expected to enter service in 2024.
