The Israeli Air Force has launched four strikes on training camp targets in the Gaza Strip, in response to a cross-border rocket attack near the port city of Ashdod.
Witnesses were cited by media sources as saying that the training camps belonged to the Islamic Jihad in Rafah, Khan Yunis and Gaza City.
IAF spokesperson lieutenant colonel Peter Lerner was quoted by Reuters as saying: "These strikes are a direct response to Hamas and the aggression against Israeli civilians originating from the Gaza Strip.
"The reality that Hamas’ territory is used as a staging ground to attack Israel is unacceptable and intolerable and will bear consequences."
Meanwhile, the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian group Hamas confirmed the mid-range rocket attack was one of the five experimental rockets fired into the sea, and that it ‘landed by mistake in the Israeli city’.
The IAF aircraft targeted terrorist infrastructure, including two weapon storage facilities in the central Gaza Strip and a rocket launch site in the southern Gaza Strip.

By GlobalDataThis latest air strike was the third since the end of the 2014 war. In April, Israel fired on Hamas’ position after a rocket attack.
The rocket attack marked the third fired from Gaza since the ceasefire ending the 50-day conflict in summer 2014. The conflict witnessed the death of 2,200 Palestinians and 73 Israelites.
