The US State Department has approved a possible $69m foreign military sale (FMS) to Australia for AGM-88B high-speed, anti-radiation (HARM) missiles, with associated equipment, parts and logistical support.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress about the potential sale.

The purchase would cover delivery of up to 14 AGM-88B HARM tactical missiles, 16 AGM-88E advanced, anti-radiation guided (AARGM) tactical missiles, and four CATM-88B captive, air-training missiles.

"The new equipments will enhance Australia’s capability to prevent regional threats and also strengthen its homeland defence."

The deal will also include the supply of eight CATM-88E advanced, anti-radiation, guided missiles (AARGM), captive air-training missiles, six AARGM Guidance Sections, five AARGM control sections, and two AARGM tactical telemetry missiles, as well as containers, spares and repair parts, and support equipment.

In addition, Australia will receive publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, US Government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistics support services, and other elements of logistics and programme support.

The new equipments will enhance Australia’s capability to prevent regional threats and also strengthen its homeland defence. The country contributes significantly to political stability, security and economic development of South East Asia.

The purchase deal will allow the US to support its partner country with improving its security.

Principal contractor for the proposal will be Orbital ATK Defense Electronics Systems.

The AGM-88 HARM is a tactical, air-to-surface missile designed to inhibit or destroy surface-to-air missile radars, early warning radars, as well as radar-directed air defence artillery systems.
