The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a potential foreign military sale of AGM-65G-2 Maverick and AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder missiles in two separate contracts totalling $140m to South Korea.

Under the sale, the Government of the Republic of Korea (ROK) seeks to receive 89 AGM-65G-2 Maverick missiles, missile containers and other related elements of support.

The AGM-65 Maverick is a tactical, air-to-ground missile that can be used for defence suppression, close air support and interdiction missions.

This precision-guided weapon is compatible for use with 25 jet fighter aircraft types, including F-16, A-10 and F-15E.

The ROK also requested for 60 AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder Block II all-up-round missiles and six AIM-9X-2 Block II tactical guidance units.

The AIM-9X is a short-range, infrared air-to-air missile that is currently in service with more than 40 countries across the world.

The sale also covers containers, spares and missile support, US Government and contractor technical assistance, and other related elements of logistics support.

The procurement will improve the ROK's capability to meet current and future threats from enemies.

With the sale, the ROK will also be able to increase its capability to participate in Pacific regional security operations and improve its national security posture as a key US ally.

Raytheon and Raytheon Missile Systems Company will serve as principal contractors for the sale of AGM-65G-2 Maverick missiles and AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder missiles respectively.
