The UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) Air Commodities Team has awarded a contract to Finmeccanica Selex for the delivery of a spares availability service.

Selex’s service is aimed to support the MoD by saving significantly on costs related with maintaining a pool of spares, such as warehousing.

Selex said the service will be provided to the MoD in collaboration with Astute Electronics.

The spares service will cover 15 air platform types stationed at more than 45 operating bases, while the contract is also expected to grow in scope as more spare parts are brought into the project.

"Under this service, Selex will be capable of predicting the requirements of spares using computer modelling."

Selex ES’s suite of proprietary data analysis software and real-time inventory management processes are significant elements of the service.

Under this service, Selex will be capable of predicting the requirements of spares using computer modelling.

In addition, it will make sure that spares are available to the MoD Air Commodities Team when required, reducing stock level.

According to Selex, the latest order is a result of the successful implementation of a spares service based on the same principles under a contract Selex received in 2014.

The service was able to meet 95% availability targets, the company added.

The UK MoD recently selected Selex to provide an ongoing radar warning capability for the Royal Air Force’s Puma helicopter fleet.

Under the €27m contract, Selex will supply its SG200-D radar warning receiver (SG200-D RWR).
